Bystanders Catch Boy Dangling off Ski Chairlift
An 11-year-old Seattle boy escaped a disaster this week when quick-thinking bystanders caught him as he dropped from a chairlift at the Whistler ski resort in Canada.
Tristan Stead was riding the Peak Express in Whistler a Town in British Columbia, Canada. Monday when he accidentally dropped his pole. He went to grab it, which is when something went wrong.
“The chairlift was pretty far away. So I went to grab it, and it hit me in the rear. And then my uncle Rufus grabbed me, and then it just went up,” Stead said.
Stead’s aunt and uncle immediately began yelling at the operators to shut down the chairlift. Stead managed to get rid of his skis as he hung for nearly 6 minutes roughly 20 feet above the ground.
Fortunately, the lift was still close to the station. The chairlift operator saw what happened, shut down the lift, grabbed a tarp and called on a half-dozen skiers to help stretch it tight beneath the child.
After a count of 1-2-3, Stead let go and landed safely in the center of the tarp, prompting cheers from onlookers.
The boy, a Seattle resident, is fine and back with his family, according to CTV.
