A mother in her forties residing in Emek Yizrael, chose home birth as her birthing option of choice.
What should have the epitome of joy turned to tragedy when complications arose. Suddenly, the newborn baby’s pulse and breathing ceased.
The local MDA branch was notified of the emergency, and an ICU ambulance was quickly dispatched.
The MDA senior staff, experts in CPR, arrived at the scene and found a baby with no pulse, and not breathing. They intubated the baby, and ventilated the baby, continuing with their efforts all the way to the Rambam Medical Center in Haifa.
Tragically, the medical staff at Rambam pronounced the baby deceased.
The mother was also transferred to the Rambam Medical Center in good condition for further examinations and post-natal care.
Erez Geller, Erez Geller MDA Carmel Region Supervisor referred to the issue of birth in general, and home births in particular. “Every birth outside a medical institution carries a small percentage of risk. Although the percentage is minimal, it is of utmost importance to have professional experts at the birth. It is imperative to identify risks and potential complications and dangers and alert Magen David Adom if an emergency situation arises. Time is of an essence, and every minute lost can be critical.
Erez Geller with all due respects don’t make this into a home birth bashing session.
True a woman in her forties should be rated high or medium risk and not set out on an adventure, but the facts on the ground are that r”l too many tragedies have happened in medical centers, where babies and / or mothers passed in childbirth or immediately after.
So please be fair.
May everyone only experience joy of parenthood in good health.
